|The Kabbalah teaches that every moment is a gateway to the Infinite if we are fully present. The Hebrew name for God, which is spelled Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, (or YHVH, for short) is, in fact, a meditation on being present. Often referred to as "the Holy Name of Being" or Shem Havayah, YHVH is a composite of the three Hebrew words hayah, hoveh, yihiyeh - was, is, will be - suggesting that divinity is pure beingness. If we can be fully present in the moment, we gain access to our divine nature.
Religious Jews have traditionally used the Shiviti, like the one on this page, in order to focus on God's presence during meditation and spiritual contemplation. For this reason, the four-letter Hebrew name YHVH always appears enlarged on the Shiviti. The word Shiviti comes from the passage in Psalms 16:8 "I place YHVH (equally) before me at all times." By developing an awareness of how the divine can be found in all things, we nurture the quality of equanimity.
So take a moment to relax and center your self. Become aware of your body and breath and try and focus on this very moment in time the present moment. If you mind wanders, simply bring your awareness back to your breath and the present moment.
If you are familiar with the Hebrew letters YHVH you can use this divine name as a focus for awareness. If not, you can simply use your breath as a focus of awareness.
Remember: This very moment in time is a gateway to the Infinite--to all of time and all of space.
|Meditation: Becoming a Vessel of Light
Take a few minutes to relax and become centered by paying attention to your breath...notice any tensions, tightness or holdings in your body and just allow yourself to deepen into a state of relaxation, allowing yourself to breath effortlessly...With each in-breath imagine that you are breathing in the divine out-breath and with each out-breath imagine that you are sending your breath back to its source in the divine...
Now imagine that above your head flows a river of white light, flowing from the heavens down to the crown of your head where it enters your body and begins to fill you with light, filling every organ and indeed every cell of your body with radiance and warmth, bringing healing energy to your entire body and your entire being.....As this light fills you, see yourself as a radiant and luminous being of light....Now imagine that you are also surrounded by light in all directions so that you are both filled with light and surrounded by light....
Let yourself bask in the light of the infinite, the "Or Ein Sof,"" and feel your body becoming lighter and lighter as you rest in the radiance of God's loving presence...
(Optional for healing) Now let yourself also become a channel for healing, allowing yourself to both receive and send healing energy out into the universe...You may wish to picture a person or persons to whom you wish to send healing energy....As you hold them in your mind and heart, share your light with them....Send them healing energy through the light emanating from your hands and fingertips....Let yourself both receive and send blessings for a complete healing--"refuat ha'nefesh urefuat ha'guf" --a healing of body and soul.
As you bring this meditation to a close, become aware once more of your breath and the boundaries of your body...the gentle rise and fall of your chest...become aware of your presence in the room where you are sitting and then gently open your eyes...
